Start with an enclosure type
Choose a broad enclosure category, then shortlist a few animals you want to build around. Terrestrial habitats, flying habitats, aquariums and exhibits have different building needs. An animal can appear in more than one category, so category counts should not be added together.
The animal cards on this page link directly to Frontier’s species pages. The names and enclosure tags come from its published Zoopedia. “Deluxe” identifies an animal in the paid Deluxe selection; every unmarked entry belongs to the base game in that source. This is a dated list of published entries, not a promise that 130 is the final release roster.
Make a shortlist you can actually use
Try choosing one habitat anchor, one smaller stop and one expansion you can save for later. For example, use African Savannah Elephant as a terrestrial theme, browse Exhibit entries for a separate small-animal area, and leave a future aquarium zone in your sketch. This is a layout exercise, not a recommended low-cost opening roster: purchase costs, staffing and welfare limits still need checking in the released game.
Keep “I want these animals in my zoo” separate from “these animals will live together.” A region, biome or water type is useful for organising a park, but it does not establish compatibility. Two species displayed in the same category are not automatically suitable tankmates.
A player’s planning spreadsheet shows why this distinction matters: the author was grouping species for future zoos while waiting to test habitat sizes and interspecies details. Use this page for the first part of that task.
Before placing your first animal
- Check that your edition includes the species. The edition comparison names all six Deluxe animals.
- Open the species entry in the released game and read the requirements for the actual group you plan to keep.
- Build staff access and leave enough room to alter the enclosure after checking welfare.
- Confirm social and environmental needs before combining species or adding more animals.
For an aquarium shortlist, continue to the aquarium preparation guide. It explains the barrier, gate and water decisions you can plan from Frontier’s published feature overview.
Questions, answered
Can I use this list to choose animals that can live together?
Use it to make a zoo shortlist. The published enclosure categories do not prove interspecies compatibility. Check the released game’s Zoopedia and welfare information before sharing a habitat or tank.
Player planning question ↗Does the list include the Deluxe animals?
Yes. Six entries carry a Deluxe label. The filter lets you isolate them; the edition guide explains the upgrade separately.
